Wednesday Writing Ages 16+: NaNoWriMo Workshop and Open Writing Time

November is National Novel Writing Month, where writers around the world take on the challenge to write 50,000 words in 30 days.  Whether you're attempting to rise to this challenge or simply want to exercise your writing muscles, join us for this evening workshop series and open writing time!

The workshops will begin with an hour of instruction time to help guide you through the construction of a novel to add depth and structure to your story, followed by two hours of writing time to work toward that 50,000 word goal.  Bring your notebook or laptop and some snacks.  We'll provide the coffee!

Week 1- Finding the Story: We'll be doing a variety of brainstorming exercises to find a starting place for a new story. We'll alsobe discussing how to find the conflict in the story, and then how to add layers and escalation to that conflict.

Week 2- Meeting Your Characters: Most of the time in a rough draft, characters begin fairly one-dimensionally, going through the motions of the story while you get the footing of your plot.  In this class we'll talk about character archetypes, Myers-Briggs personality types, and exercises to add a voice to your character.

Week 3- Exploring the World: We'll talk about different ways to create a world that feels very real to your reader, whether it's a snapshot of our own world or a completely fantastical one out of your head.

Week 4- Mythic Structure: We'll discuss Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey and the mythic structure that has appeared in stories from ancient folktales to Star Wars.
